How Claude Code works

Claude Code brings Claude models into a software project’s terminal workflow. It can inspect a codebase, propose file edits, and carry out multi-step tasks through tools. File access and commands are governed by permissions, so developers should keep changes visible and reviewable.

Setup and first use

Anthropic’s setup guide describes operating-system, Node.js, and authentication requirements. On Windows, supported approaches include WSL and Git for Windows. Follow the current official installation instructions, run claude doctor to check the setup, and start Claude Code from the project directory. App subscriptions and Console/API authentication may have different usage and billing rules.

A safer development loop

Start with a bounded task and ask for a plan. Review file changes through a diff, run the project’s tests, and keep a Git recovery point. Avoid disabling permission prompts or automatically approving every command; grant only the access the task needs. Human confirmation should remain in place for production data, credentials, and destructive operations.

Set permissions for the project

Record Git status and existing changes before work begins. Limit Claude Code’s working directory and command permissions to the task; read the explanation before approving a new command or deletion. For large changes, inspect the scope in plan mode first.

Example prompt

Inspect this repository read-only and propose a fix plan. Do not edit files or run commands; list affected files and verification steps.
