Provide context before requesting code
Share the language and version, framework, file structure, error message, and expected behavior. Do not paste secrets, customer records, or passwords. Rather than asking for an entire system at once, have Claude explain the existing code and propose a small, reviewable plan.
Work in small changes
Ask Claude to complete one task, list the affected files, and explain the reasoning behind the change. Review the diff, then run tests, type checks, linting, and security scans. If something fails, provide the exact output and reproduction steps so the next revision can address the cause.
Keep engineering judgment in the loop
Generated code may contain logic bugs, vulnerabilities, licensing issues, or conflicts with the project architecture. Check the origin and maintenance status of dependencies, and test database or payment changes in a backed-up environment. AI can speed up coding, but it does not replace human review, tests, or version control.
Keep each change verifiable
Tell Claude which files must remain untouched and define acceptance criteria. After each change, retain the test output and review dependencies, access control, error handling, and logs as part of the code review.
Example prompt
Fix the empty-input bug in this function. Do not change other behavior; add focused tests, summarize the diff, and list any tests you did not run.
